Description: Fred Thayer cabinet card by Pach Bros. - rare image of the inventor of the catchers' mask c.1870s.. Crisp sepia toned image showing Thayer in Harvard uniform. It was during his time playing baseball at the noted college that Thayer devised the first catchers' mask to protect teammate Jim Tyng who was frequently getting hit in the head with balls. He would later file for a patent on his new invention and it would go on to be universally adopted as a required piece of equipment. Card offers strong eye appeal with a small lower corner crease. Back has a large and distinct "Pach" mark along with some handwriting notations: SGC 1.5 FR
