Lot Number: 107

Description: Museum quality folk art decorated baseball bat c.1850-70s) - A magnificent example and one of the finest to reach the market. Hand turned 38" long bat done in lightweight wood has been decorated throughout with elaborate and appealing detail in polychrome paint. While hand applied decorations were semi-common to bats produced in this time period they are typically limited to a series of rings. The offered bat ranks among the most beautifully done we have seen or offered with vibrant color to the work which was clearly executed by an artist who possessed the highest level of skill for the medium. The focal point is a uniformed player with ball in hand standing atop a bat and "Champion" is lettered below. In additional there are floral accents and the barrel end features an intricate pattern. Gilded highlights are tastefully applied. In exceptional condition with just a hint of light scattered wear. The offered bat originated from the Fitchburg, MA area and to the best of our knowledge has only been in the possession of a few owners since its creation in the mid 19th century. The level of quality and preservation cannot be overstated and the offered bat is one of the very best of its' type we have handled in our 30+ year company history. Masterful: EX/MT
