Lot Number: 56

Description: Superb 1956 Bill Russell U.S. Olympic team professional model warm up suit (Photo match). Warmup jacket and pants as worn by Bill Russell and the 1956 U.S. Men’s Olympic team. Constructed of white fleece like material with red and blue trim, the jacket has “U.S.A.” lettered across the back and number “6”on the sleeve. Wilson tag in the collar has adjacent tag on which “W. Russell #6” is typed along with size“44” and custom hem notations. Matching pants likewise have the number “6” applied and are similarly tagged (size 34). The warm up suit was recently confirmed to have been issued to and worn by Russell in relation to the 1956 Olympic team as documented within the FIBA 1956 Winter Brochure picturing Russell and his teammates wearing the offered suits. It is unclear if these were worn before the games for promotional use and then also at the games in addition to the navy blue warm ups seen in various period images. In any case, the Russell warm up suit serves as one of the most significant documented surviving garments of its type with relation to one the greatest career accomplishments for the basketball icon. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions and signed letter of provenance from Bill Russell: EX
