Description: Superb 1900 Christy Mathewson handwritten letter dated just weeks before his Major League debut. Handwritten letter dated April 4, 1900 as sent by Mathewson while a member of the Norfolk Phenoms just prior to his debut with the New York Giants on July 17th of the same year. Choice content relates to his arrival in Washington, D.C. after "7hrs, 60 stops, 189.4 miles from Montandon" (PA). Matty writes of sightseeing around the Capitol including stops at "the Navy Yard where hundreds of men are making dozens of big murderous-looking cannon, and last but not least, the world renowned museums of the Smithsonian." He further mentions "I spent about two hours at the Library of Congress last eve...a new building and it is one at which any American may point with pride." It has been signed at the close, Yours as ever, C. Mathews (sic) Norfolk B.B.C." Handwriting and signature are done in fountain pen rating 7-7/8 out of 10 and there is a touch of light wear and discoloration to the letter along with a horizontal fold at center. One of the earliest substantive Mathewson pieces to have surfaced and the first time it is appearing at public auction. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA: EX-EX/MT
