Description: Exceptional folk art painted baseball bat c.1880-1900. Oversized soft wood hand turned baseball bat measuring an amazing 44" long having been extensively decorated with painted decor of baseball relation. Central design of crossed bats with baseballs flanking a pair of high top black baseball socks having "Leigh" above. The body of the bat displays several different painted vignette images including game scene, batting scenes, fielding scene, and pitching scene. Additional high top black socks are found towards the handle of the bat in addition to several areas of colorfully painted geometrical symbols dispersed throughout the entire bat. The geometrical decor is similar in nature to various Masonic decorative techniques of a similar time period. Condition grade is superb, retaining its original unrestored surface with only small areas of minor paint flaking and one area with a few 1" to 2" surface scratches. Cast iron eyelet remains on top of the barrel end which indicates this may have been created as a presentational display piece of some sort or perhaps a trade sign. The offered bat originated from a home in Montana whose inhabitants were originally of an East Coast familial origin.
