Lot Number: 187

Description: Historically significant 1914 Ty Cobb autographed professional model baseball bat from the year of his 7th batting title - an exceptional example from the Maier Collection (PSA "GU 10"). JF Hillerich & Son Louisville Slugger bat with double dash-dot-dash centerbrand measures 34.5" long and weighs 39.2oz. Uncracked and showing evidence of exceptional usage wear, there are ball marks concentrated on the front and right barrel and cleat marks on the left and back. Grain swelling on the front, due to repeated contact, has been repaired with a series of period nails. The handle is taped in a spiral pattern to enhance grip. This handle tape and the cleat marks are Cobb trademark characteristics and exceptionally desirable player specific traits. The bat has been signed "To Mr. Maier from Ty Cobb, Sept 18th 14" further serving to place it directly into his hands. The Tigers played Philadelphia at Navin Field on the 18th and Cobb drew a pair of walks in four plate appearances. It is no surprise that the Athletics were attempting to pitch around him; he had all but run away with the 1914 American League batting title by then and would finish the season with a .368 average. The bat originates from the collection of Edward Maier to whom it is inscribed. Maier was a well known Pacific Coast League team owner and one of the earliest documented collectors of noteworthy baseball memorabilia with a particular fondness for game used bats. Bats emanating from this source are considered to be among the most well documented and desirable to have surfaced and this example is no exception. With regard to first hand provenance, autographed nature of the bat, and player specific usage characteristics, we are proud to present what ranks among the very finest Ty Cobb bats ever offered. Includes LOAs from PSA/DNA ("GU 10"), JSA, and Hunt Auctions: EX
