Lot Number: 176

Description: Outstanding and unique Mickey Mantle professional model baseball bat c.1958 - Confiscated by Umpire Ed Hurley! (PSA/DNA "GU 10"). Adirondack 302 model bat with "Mickey Mantle" block lettered into the barrel measures 35" long and weighs 33.2oz. Model number "206A" has been factory stamped in the knob. Light usage wear is evident throughout and the entire reverse of the barrel has been "pock" marked with what must have the tip of nail or sharp tool. As relayed in the accompanying letter of provenance, signed by Umpire Ed Hurley, "...It was during the 1958 season that I confiscated this Mickey Mantle white letter Adirondack bat...While at bat I noticed the Mick's bat revealed pock marking, forming a grid of perforations on the barrel in an area thick enough to cover both sides of sweetspot for a switch-hitter. Apparently Mantle believed the waffle-iron effect would provide more traction and harder contact. I had no choice but to remove it from the game because this practice is against the rules of baseball." In the midst of his most productive seasons, Mantle would lead the American League in home runs for 1958 as the Yankees went on to claim their fifth World Series Championship with him as a team member. An exceptional example with regard to provenance and overall display value. Includes letter of provenance from Hurley and LOAs from PSA/DNA ("GU 10"), MEARS ("A10"), and Hunt Auctions: EX
