Description: Significant 1914 Providence Grays baseball team cabinet photograph with Babe Ruth. Striking mounted image picturing the 1914 Providence Grays with a young rookie by the name of Babe Ruth. The Boston Red Sox had purchased the rights to Babe Ruth from the Baltimore Orioles of the International League. He began with the Red Sox in July and played in his first game on July 11, 1914. After about one month, the Red Sox optioned him to the Providence Grays in order to give Ruth some playing time and allow his skills to develop. He proceeded to lead the team to the International League title behind a pitching record of 8-3. The photograph itself measures 11"x13 1/2" remaining affixed to its original mount having impressed stamping at bottom right, "General Photo Co. 131 Washington St. Providence, RI". Image quality is breathtaking retaining its original contrast and clarity with precise detail. There are a few minor surface scratches to the background area near the top left and two very small surface spots near right side of players which could be easily restored if desired. The original mount also remains in very fine condition with only some typical light age toning. Includes vintage typewritten identification key on a piece of 2"x8" paper which had been affixed to the glass in the family home. The 1914 Providence Grays team photograph is one of the most highly sought after original baseball images with only a handful of original prints extant with the offered specimen being recently uncovered. Incredible scarcity of great significance dating to Babe Ruth's first professional season: EX-EX/MT
