Description: Rare Whitey Kurowski St. Louis Cardinals professional model hat c.1942. Original St. Louis Cardinals professional model hat worn by Kurowski retains its embroidered Cardinals "redbird" logo on the front. Interior leather band is stamped with the Spalding logo in silver and has a "Brooklyn Safety Cap" mfg. label. Uniform numeral, "6 7/8" and "1" size are chain stitched into the leather band as well. The hat also features very rare inset head protectors on either side panel of a hard composite. A precursor to the batting helmet, these protectors were used as a prototype for a very brief period of time and as such are notably rare on any hat style. The hat exhibits evident use including buckling to the interior leather band from perspiration and general surface wear. The edge of the bill has a slight loss to the red felt surface at the tip. The offered hat represents an exceedingly scarce style type with regard to interior head protection and one year logo style. The hat originated from the collection of a former Cardinals employee in the period and includes LOA from Hunt Auctions along with a letter of provenance: EX
