Lot Number: 325

Description: Fine 1982 Cal Ripken Jr. Baltimore Orioles road jersey. Grey knit jersey retains its original "Orioles" team name across the front with #8 beneath. The back of the jersey has "Ripken" nameplate above #8. Rawlings tagging remains affixed inside the tail front along with Set 1 1982 flag tag. The jersey exhibits evident moderate use and wash wear with appropriate sizing in comparison to other Ripken shirts from the period. Underneath the nameplate on the back are vestiges of a larger nameplate which was removed/altered by the team before the current nameplate was applied, also by the team. The current nameplate on the jersey is consistent in every respect with other 1982 Orioles jerseys from that season, inclusive of the interior stitching pattern, which was compared with several common player 1982 road shirts. The offered jersey originated directly from a team source in the period along with several other 1982 Orioles road jerseys (all of which remain in a single private collection) and is being offered to the collecting public at auction for the first time. The 1982 season was Cal Ripken Jr.'s first full season in the Major Leagues and he certainly lived up to the billing, capturing the Rookie of the Year award for the American League. Additionally, on May 30th of the 1982 season, Ripken unknowingly embarked on the streak that would define his career, playing in a record 2,632 consecutive games - a streak which ended on the final game of the 1998 season. The offered jersey is one of the finest Cal Ripken game worn shirts to have been offered at auction with impeccable original provenance. Includes LOA from MEARS Authentication (Graded A9) and LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
