Description: Scarce and Important 1924 Negro League World Series "Opening Game" panoramic photograph from Kansas City Monarchs Player Carroll Ray "Dink" Mothell. Historic image as taken on October 11, 1924 in Kansas City showing the hometown Monarchs and rival Hilldale Daisies just prior to Game (5) of the Inaugural Negro League World Series. Captioning at top reads in part, "First Colored World Series Opening Game...at Kansas City" and players/personnel are identified below their respective likenesses. Amongst those shown are a host of notables including (8) future Hall of Fame Inductees: players Jose Mendez, Bullet Rogan, Judy Johnson, Biz Mackey, and Luis Santop and League/team Officials Rube Foster, J.L. Wilkinson, and Alex Pompez. The best of nine game Series was ultimately won by Kansas City having been played in four different venues across just as many states with Game (5) being the first (thus "Opening") in Kansas City. Photograph offers exceptional display qualities with uncommonly deep contrast that may well be the finest of the elite surviving examples. The photograph measures 6.5"x35" and has a few vertical crease lines that have been professionally conserved with very light inpainting and laid down on acid free board (reversible if desired). The 1924 Negro League World Series image is without equal for its medium. It is appropriately the most prolific image that is replicated and recognized symbolically as the pinnacle of African American baseball before the 1947 integration of Major League Baseball. This particular example was obtained by Phil Dixon directly from Kansas City Monarchs player and World Series participant Carroll Ray "Dink" Mothell ranking among the very finest known exemplars of this incredibly significant image.
