Description: Important 1933 Max Carey National League All-Star Game professional model uniform (Inaugural MLB All-Star Game)(SGC/Grob: Superior). Grey flannel jersey has "National League" team name lettered across the front and number "20" on back. A "Spalding" tag appears in the collar with name "M Carey" chain stitched on the right. Matching pants bear the same tag and player identifier and have a "W - 39 L - 25" handwritten size notation. Both pieces are well preserved with appropriate light use and some minor age/storage related wear including a touch light of toning. The uniform has been examined by Dave Grob of SGC and graded "Superior." Carey was brought on as a Coach for the National League with his (20) year playing career having ended in 1930. He was most notably a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates (from 1910-1926) where he had excelled in the outfield and was a key member of their 1925 World Series Championship team. He is one of a staggering number (twenty) of future Hall of Famers to have participated in the 1933 All-Star Game. The game was the brainchild of Arch Ward of the Chicago Tribune after Mayor Edward Kelly floated the idea of a major sports event, timed to coincide with Chicago's hosting of the World's Fair, which would help to boost morale during the Great Depression. It would become a highly anticipated annual event showcasing the games' greatest talent. There are a scant few surviving original uniforms which were issued for the 1933 affair and the offered is the very first that we have offered at auction in over (20) years.
