Description: Willie Mays 1964 National League Gold Glove Award. Prestigious figural award as presented annually to the premier defensive players of the National and American Leagues by position. Walnut wooden plinth base displays a full-size gilt-painted Rawlings leather glove with “Major League All-Star Fielding Team” impressed black lettering. Figural brass baseball shaped finial affixed in front of diamond shaped wooden backsplash with brass facade having “Rawlings Gold Glove Award” inscribed on front. Brass placard displayed on front of base inscribed, “OF Willie Mays 8th Award 1964 The Sporting News National League All-Star Fielding Team”. 16” long with some light patination to the brass surface of baseball finish. Please note, the glove portion of the award is a period example which is original to the Willie Mays collection. It is to be noted that we have identified several different photographs of Mays receiving gold glove awards with one that conflicts with this glove style on the 1964 award. Additionally, we have identified that two glove types were used for several seasons on these awards including 1964. To insure complete transparency, we are offering this award with the glove portion guaranteed to have originated from the Mays Collection but we are not able to fully confirm that it was with the 1964 award.
