Description: Significant 1970 Willie Mays Major League Baseball Commissioner's Award (Mays Collection Photomatch). Prestigious honor as annually bestowed upon the player "most typifying the game on and of the field.". The award was renamed in 1973 as the Roberto Clemente Award after Clemente's tragic passing while delivering humanitarian relief. Simplistic yet striking award consisting of mahogany wooden panels with silverplated frontice piece and decorative panels at bottom. The front silverplated panel features an embossed MLB insignia with "The Commissioner's Award" impressed lettering and "1970 The man most typifying the game on and off the field" slogan. Impressive 18" total height with light surface wear and very small piece of wood veneer at the top having been restored noted for extreme accuracy only. The award is accompanied by several vintage photographs of Mays with the award at the ceremonies and also includes certificate of provenance from the Willie Mays Collection: EX
