Description: Significant 1968 Willie Mays MLB All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award (Mays Collection Photomatch). ed Williams famously remarked, “They made the All-Star Game for Willie Mays”. Mays appeared in a remarkable twenty-four MLB All-Star contests tied for second all time with Stan Musial and behind only Hank Aaron (25). Willie took great pride in his All-Star Game selections and played with incredible effort on behalf of his National League peers. The 1968 Midsummer Classic was played at the newly opened Astrodome in Houston noted as the first such occasion to have been held at an indoor stadium venue. Willie Mays was narrowly beaten out by Hank Aaron for a starting outfield position but ended up starting anyway for an injured Pete Rose. In the first inning, Mays reached base after a single and scored what ended up being the lone run of the game and as such was named Most Valuable Player of the game. Presented is the Arch Ward Memorial Award which Mays was given as the MVP of the game standing an impressive 29” tall with walnut wooden base pedestal supporting a large two handled brass loving cup engraved “MVP” with athletic finial at the top. “Arch Ward Memorial Award” engraved titling on brass placard with an additional brass placard at bottom engraved, “Presented to Willie Mays by the Rawlings Sporting Goods Company for his Outstanding Performance in the 1968 All-Star Game Houston, Texas”. Superb overall condition with a hint of general surface wear evident of its meaning within the collection having been photographed with Willie on a number of occasions. Outstanding presentational award with relation to one of the most significant players in the history of the Midsummer Classic.
