Description: Fine 1989 Mike Schmidt Philadelphia Phillies road jersey with direct team provenance. Although it seemed like a routine road series for Mike Schmidt and the Philadelphia Phillies, the San Francisco trip at the end of May in 1989 turned out to be the final series of Schmidt's storied career. Plagued by poor hitting and two very costly errors in San Francisco, Mike Schmidt abruptly announced his retirement on May 28, 1989. Having already secured entry to the Hall of Fame with his outstanding career statistics, Schmidt refused to accept a lower standard of play given everything he had already accomplished. His character as a player, and as a person, led him to walk away from the game in a professional manner befitting his place in baseball history. Offered is a complete road grey knit uniform worn by Schmidt during that final season of 1989. The jersey retains its original "P" on the front along with #20. Back has "Schmidt" nameplate above #20. Rawlings mfg. label with "Set 1 1989" flag tag remains inside the collar area with Phillies logo patch affixed to the left sleeve. Signed by Schmidt in blue sharpie on the reverse. Matching pants retain Rawlings tagging on the interior waistband along with "Schmidt 35 31" stitched strip tag and "Set 1 1989" flag tag. Both jersey and pants show evident usage and wash wear inclusive of a pronounced stain on the left shoulder of the jersey and evident surface "pilling" and staining to the rear of the right pant leg from sliding during game play. Most notably, the offered uniform includes the original letter of authenticity typewritten on Phillies stationary dated July 30, 1990. The letter details that the uniform had been used during game play in Schmidt's final season of 1989 and was subsequently sold at the Phillies annual ALS Association charity auction. The letter is signed by Schmidt at the bottom and also includes its original Phillies logo auction lot tag.
