See a Picture of this Item 626 Significant Spalding folk art store display trade figure c.1915-20. Life size terra cotta two piece figure stands smiling with an outstretched hand holding a Spalding "Boys' Favorite" baseball. The back of the mustard color vest features hand painted lettering, "Spalding's L'il Ball Boy mascot". Hat has a similar hand painted "S" and a crossed bat and glove motif appears on both sides of the vest collar. The figure stands 43" tall positioned atop a painted wooden plinth that has been made for display (created more then 10 years ago). A small cylindrical piece remains attached to the back left leg area which apparently was used to anchor the figure to its original base or place of occupation. Retains a fine surface with an unusually large quantity of its original paint. The figure does have some restoration to a few cracks, some inpainting to areas of damage, and various minor fissures and areas of wear that one could expect from a piece of its size and original fragility. One of the more coveted baseball related folk art items that has come into the marketplace and is one of only three known exemplars. The other two were a matched pair (mascot similar to the offered lot and a matching batter). The matching batter figure remains in a private collection and the identical mascot was, unfortunately, severely damaged and ultimately destroyed many years ago by accident. The figures may have been intended to depict Clarence Duval, the mascot who was severely mistreated when he accompanied Albert Spalding and his 1888-1889 World Tourists throughout Italy, Egypt and Australia (see Peter Levine, A.G. Spalding and the Rise of Baseball), although the figure's later dating argues for a less direct inspiration. Clarence Duval "joined" the White Stockings as mascot in 1887 (newspapers referred to his "capture"). Spalding's eponymous company, more than any other in baseball's history, is responsible for standardizing the manufacture of the baseball itself and for commercializing the sale of baseball related products through exclusive licensing, athlete endorsement, and the publication of its annual guides. In addition to its significance as a baseball display rarity the offered statue is a poignant reminder of the social status of African Americans during the teens and 1920's era in this country. During this period baseball still resisted the inevitable integration that would eventually elevate the game to new levels of popularity and make the sport a true National Pastime in every sense of the title. Superb baseball display piece of equal import to both folk art and sports collecting: EX (With note to restoration) ($20,000.00-$30,000.00) $41,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 657a Scarce Civil War era inscribed Massachusetts style trophy baseball and related Civil War diary c.1864. Black leather 9" diameter four piece lemon peel style baseball with a period inscription on two side panels, "22nd MASS REGIMENT UNION Feb. 2, 1864 U.S.A.". The 22nd Mass. regiment fought in many of the War's most important battles, including Chancellorsville, Gainsville and Gettysburg, where on July 2, 1863 they participated in some of the heaviest and most important fighting in 'The Wheatfield.' Additional gravity is added to the ball's historical importance given the proximity in time to the unit's experiences on Gettysburg's battlefields and Virginia's baseball field. The baseball may also be considered a "true" example of a ball created specifically under the rules of the "Massachusetts game," which allowed runners to be thrown out when struck by a baseball, rather than tagged out as in the "New York game." Ball exhibits typical age and usage wear remaining intact and fairly clean overall: EX. Includes Civil War diary of H.E. Randell of Co. L, 3rd Regiment of the New York Cavalry, acquired separately from the ball. Although the author, H.E. Randell, was in Co. L, 3rd Regiment of the New York Cavalry, research indicates that the two regiments were camped in reasonably close proximity in Virginia in February 1864, an unlikely time for baseball play. The multi-page handwritten diary gives a highly literate soldier's accounts of life in the field during the Civil War. Randell's entry for Feb. 2, 1864 reads, in part, "Played Base Ball nearly all day and experienced a "chapter" of accidents. Got a severe blow with ball in the face, and a finger almost broken......for it is a healthful sport and quite exciting." Randell's reference to being struck by the ball also corroborates the contention that the game, played between New York and Massachusetts regiments, was played under Massachusetts rules. Diary remains very clean housed in its original leather casing: EX. Interesting pair of baseball items from the formative period of the game. ($3,000.00-$4,000.00) $5,500.00

See a Picture of this Item 660 Important Ty Cobb Detroit Tigers hat c.1918-20. Major League game worn equipment from the first quarter of the 20th century is seldom found in any form. It is no accident that baseball hats of that period are easily the most elusive to acquire given their heavy usage and tendency to be lost or destroyed. Baseball during the 1910-1920's era was a rough game. The dominant players were fearless and won at all costs evidenced by their respective names and the legends that accompany their play. The greatest of these warriors was Cobb. No other player has ever, nor will, match his limitless passion for the game and moreover the will to win. Offered is Ty Cobb's Detroit Tigers hat c.1918-20. The hat exhibits heavy usage wear including appropriate color toning to the top from sunlight exposure, general soiling, wear consistent with usage to the interior leather head band, and losses to the "D" at the front of the hat consistent with evident usage. The unique "D" lettering on the front of the cap allows for a dating period of 1918-20. Spalding tag remains affixed into the interior leather band. On the interior leather head band an inscribed/scratched in name is partially visible which, although not completely legible, appears to be "Tyrus". The hat itself remains in a remarkable state of preservation given its age and owner as it no doubt was placed in his pocket, fell off of his head during a slide, and was more than likely ripped from his head during altercations with other players. Hat originated along with the glove (Lot 662) from one of Ty Cobb's business advisors and assistant Andrew Morgan. Morgan presented the hat (and glove) to an acquaintance Mr. Garet Clark in 1941. Included with the hat is the original July 22, 1941 typed letter from Andrew Morgan to Clark that accompanied the two objects. The letter reads in part, "With this letter I am sending you a couple of my cherished gifts from Mr. Cobb, as I told you he wasn't as bad as most people made him out to be. Enclosed in the box is a glove that Mr. Cobb loved and had on his desk for many years, on one good business day he gave it to me as a good gesture. I have also given you one of his caps from the old Tiger days.....The cap was given to me last October and it had just been sitting around gathering dust said Mr. Cobb when he tossed it across the room into my lap." The letter is signed at the bottom by Andrew Morgan in black ink. It is nearly unprecedented for an item of this type and age to be accompanied by such definitive provenance from the era in which it was received. It is to the best of our knowledge the only Cobb game hat known to exist. The rarity of such an object can only be equated to the passion for excellence on the ballfield possessed by the player who once wore this hat. Includes the original July 22, 1941 typed letter from Andrew Morgan to Garet Clark, LOA from SCD Authentic D.Bushing-D.Knoll, copies of several photographs picturing Cobb wearing similar uniforms and/or hats, LOA from PSA/DNA J.Spence-S.Grad regarding the integrity/dating of the Andrew Morgan letter, and a letter of provenance from the current consignor documenting the lineage from the Clark family to the present: VG-EX (Estimate Upon Request) $75,000.00

See a Picture of this Item 661 Significant fielder's glove attributed to Ty Cobb c.1925. High quality RHT fielder's glove with buckle back. Glove shows evident usage with interior pocket soiling and wear to the padding consistent with usage including surface checking. Features a double tunnel and lacing web arrangement that was prevalent around the 1925-30 period as a refinement to the Bill Doak style of glove using only lacing. This tunnel system allowed for greater strength and longer lasting webs. Interestingly, as great of a left handed batsman that Cobb was he threw with his right hand which is also consistent with the construction of the offered glove. As detailed in Lot #661 the Cobb hat the offered glove originated from Andrew Morgan who was one of Cobb's business advisors and assistant. In the letter dated 1941 Morgan refers to a newspaper clipping that he had later found which he believed to picture Cobb wearing a similar glove c.1914-18. That very newspaper photo is included to provide further corroboration of the Morgan letter of provenance but it is not picturing Cobb wearing the offered glove. The newspaper dates to the 1912 era while the offered glove is clearly a 1920's example. The glove iteself remains in a fine state of preservation having supple light brown leather surface with original lacings and padding intact. To the best of our knowledge there are only two other documented Ty Cobb game worn gloves extant both of which now reside in museum collections. As in the case of the Cobb hat offered in the previous lot it is nearly unprecedented to have a vintage primary source letter of provenance regarding a glove of this age and import. Without question one of the finest game used baseball gloves to be publicly offered. Includes xerox copy of the 1941 Andrew Morgan letter of provenance, LOA from SCD Authentic D.Bushing-D.Knoll, LOA from PSA/DNA J.Spence-S.Grad regarding the integrity/dating of the original 1941 Andrew Morgan letter, original newspaper clipping mentioned in the Morgan letter of provenance, and letter of provenance from the consignor regarding the lineage from the Clark family to the present: EX (Estimate Upon Request) $34,000.00
