After leaving the job in 1970, Rundell was the school's athletic director for eight years. Rundell, an Ohio native, played at San Diego State and began his coaching career there as an assistant. He was a member of the 1955 U.S. team in the Pan American Games. The trophy remains in original condition with some patination to the metal surface and a few very minor surface indentations. Lucas is widely regarded as one of the greatest collegiate players in basketball history, having led the Buckeyes to the National Championship in 1960.
