Description: 1937 Joe DiMaggio Player of the Year Award. Very prestigious award plaque presented to DiMaggio by the New York Chapter of the Baseball Writer's Association in honor of his designation as the Player of the Year. The Baseball Writer's Association had been in conflict with the Sporting News with regard to the selection process for the Most Valuable Player award recipients from each league. During the period the offered award was one of the most coveted that a player could receive and rarely become available to the collecting public. Mahogany plaque measuring 13 1/2"x17" has an applied silverplated placard on the front featuring a beautiful relief decorated scene of Yankee Stadium with an image of Joe DiMaggio holding a bat in the center. Inscribed, "New York Chapter Baseball Writer's Association to Joe Paul DiMaggio New York Yankees in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a player and his qualities as a sportsman". A separate, smaller placard with "Player of Year 1937 Award" is positioned near the bottom of the plaque. The wooden plaque itself has a few minor indentations and some light surface scratching to the finish. The silverplated placard has some wear to the silver plating in a few areas retaining an attractive, vintage appearance. Although not tagged, the plaque is attributed to the New York firm of Dieges & Clust. With the exception of the Most Valuable Player award, the offered plaque is one of the most highly sought after of all individual player award pieces. Includes vintage 8"x10" photo from the DiMaggio collection picturing Joe receiving the plaque along with Kennesaw Mountain Landis: EX
