Lot 29

Description: Folk art baseball children's sled c.1888. Wooden sled with original cast iron runners features a painted surface with baseball catcher decoration in polychrome. "Kelley" is painted beneath the player image in reference to the popular 19th century player Mike "King" Kelly (misspelled Kelley on the sled). The song "Slide Kelly Slide" was written in regard to Kelly and likely explains the motive for the titling of the sled. Painted surface remains very fine with brilliant original color and patination. One board of the main body has a repaired fissure. Of the few known examples, the offered sled is among the finest with regard to condition: EX-EX/MT
