Description: Significant Ray Chapman incident related archive from the Barry Halper Collection (with 12 Carl Mays autographs). Substantial grouping of material as assembled by the noted collector as relates to the tragic on field death of Chapman resulting from a pitch thrown by Carl Mays. Includes: 1913 Cleveland Indians advertising postcard picturing Chapman and promoting home games vs. Red Sox; (2) different black leather bound Chapman memorial programs with the larger a gilt lettered presentational example (signed on the last page by Cleveland Mayor and Harry Davis as organizer of the memorial committee); appreciation card from Mrs. Chapman et. al. in thanks for a mourner's sympathies; (10) telegrams which were sent from either team to team or a team to Ban Johnson with (8) specifically referencing either the incident or player/team reaction (incl. pieces from Harry Frazee, Ban Johnson, and Jacob Ruppert); (2) Typed letters on American League stationary from Ban Johnson to Jacob Ruppert related to the aftermath of the Chapman incident. One of these is signed by Johnson and includes a telegram which he was forwarding, the other is secreterial signed; Tigers owner Frank Navin signed letter to Ruppert which references a telegram he sent to Manager Hugh Jennings. The included period file copy of the telegram text has choice content related to how he wished his team to react publicly; several additional file/copy letters from the period, some with choice content (one secreterial signed by Ruppert and T.L. Houston); early 1920s 6.5"x8.5" photo of Mays by Charles Conlon with his handwritten notes and "Conlon Photo" signature on back and similar period photo of Cleveland player wearing Chapman memorial armband which is marked "Van Oeyen"; 1921 Mays Exhibits postcard; several pieces related to a 1919 incident in which Mays threw at a fan in Philadelphia who later pressed charges (these incl. secreterial signed letters from both Johnson and Barrow); (3) page handwritten letter dated 1960 which talks at length about a Tigers game played after the Chapman incident and is signed "Carl W. Mays." Content reads in part, "...Cobb walked out to the mound and told me I should be more careful, I had just killed a man..." (accompained by Fred Haney TLS which is related to this letter); (3) additional Mays handwritten and signed letters (one with choice Walter Johnson content) plus a shorter Mays signed note; (2) Mays vintage fountain pen signed "Sporting News" consent forms; (2) Mays signed 8"x10" black and white photographs; Mays signed publication clipping, index card, and 1936 dated Gov't Postcard; and a handful of addtional pieces. Varying degrees of light to moderate wear throughout (slightly more accentuated in some cases), ink signatures rate 7 to 8/9 out of 10.
