Lot Number: 261

Description: Rare Dave Bancroft professional model baseball bat c.1917-21. Louisville Slugger 125 model bat, with early dash-dot-dash centerbrand, has a deeply impressed and very well defined "David J. Bancroft" facsimile signature burned into the barrel. The bat measures just under 35" long and weighs 36.8oz. Strong usage wear is evident throughout with visible ball, stitch, and cleat marks. A handle crack has been glued down and some grain swelling at the barrel end has been secured with a pair of vintage nails on the back. The last 3" of the barrel were long ago painted black with the bulk of that color remaining. There are a few small chips in the knob. Bancroft spent (16) seasons in the Major Leagues starting with his 1915 Rookie campaign in which he helped the Philadelphia Phillies to a National League pennant. Following a contract dispute in 1920 he was traded to the Giants and it was in New York, under Legendary Manager John McGraw, that he flourished becoming key to a pair of World Series Championship teams. The ensuing years saw stops in Boston (as both player and Manager), Brooklyn, and again in New York where he played out his Hall of Fame career. Of noted rarity, this is the first Bancroft bat we have offered and only the second we can find to have been sold in recent years. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
