Lot Number: 225

Description: Important Tony Gwynn 1988 National League Batting Champion Silver Bat award. Full sized 34" silver plated baseball bat has the famed "Louisville Slugger" logo engraved at the centerbrand area. "Tony Gwynn" facsimile signature appears on the barrel which is lettered, "Batting Champion 1988, National League, B.A. .313." Touch of light wear to the silver finished surface. One of the most consistent hitters in the history of the game, Gwynn won a total of (8) batting titles, equaling the National League record he now shares with Honus Wagner. Never once hitting below .309, his .338 career average is, by far, the best of any player to set foot on the field since Ted Williams. The 1988 season marked his second consecutive atop the N.L. and for his efforts he was presented with this particular award, the third of his career. Given his importance as a hitter and standing within the games' history, we are comfortable in stating that this ranks among the most significant modern era baseball award pieces ever offered at auction. Includes letter of provenance from the Gwynn Family: EX/MT
