Lot Number: 265

Description: Significant October 1, 1970 Connie Mack Stadium last game attributed first base. Vintage rubber base displays strong usage wear and remains affixed to it's original metal anchor via a series of cloth straps. A letter of provenance relates the history of being obtained by a young man and his grandfather whom were in attendance for the last game played at the fabled Philadelphia venue. Upon entering the stadium the pair filled out an entry form for a contest which awarded game and venue related mementos. Results were published in the October 3, 1970 issue of the Philadelphia Inquirer and they won the "First Base Bag." The grandson was allowed to retain possession of the base until selling it in 1999. Originally opened as Shibe Park in 1909 the Stadium remained in operation for (6) decades hosting the Athletics and Phillies along with scores of numerous events both baseball related and otherwise. An outstanding early piece with exceptional provenance and the first of it's type we are aware of. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions, letter of provenance, and original game ticket stub: EX
