Lot Number: 182

Description: Fine 1927 Lou Gehrig handwritten and signed letter with original mailing envelope. Lengthy handwritten letter covering (2) sheets of "Book Cadillac Hotel" stationary penned by Gehrig to a friend with content largely related to Ford automobiles. One interesting section, in reference to Henry Ford, reads in part, "I was out to see old Henry and said well...I want to open an agency in N.Y. What's the dope - and he said, well Mr. Gehrig ole boy, ole boy - you see it's this way..." A short paragraph later notes "As for the baseballs I'll have them for you when we get to N.Y." Signed at the close, "Sincerely Lou" in fountain pen rating 8-8/9 out of 10. Original mailing envelope is postmarked August 26, 1927 and bears additional "L Gehrig" signature within return address. The Yankees played in Detroit that day, besting the Tigers 8-6 with Gehrig contributing a double and sacrafice hit to the effort. Typical mailing folds to letter along with some light toning; envelope is torn at edges from opening with general mild wear. Exceptional and rare letter with desirability furthered by ties to one of the most fabled teams in history. Includes auction LOA from JSA: Letter EX/MT, Envelope VG-EX, Sigs. NM
