Lot Number: 341

Description: January 11, 1894 Kid Nichols handwritten letter to Mrs. Charley Bennett with pair of Bennett cabinet photographs. Significant two page letter written by Kid Nichols to Alice Bennett shortly after the accident which cost her husband his legs and ended his playing career. Heartfelt and exceptional content reads in part, "I saw the account in the San Francisco paper that Mr Bennett got two legs cut off...it made me sick when I heard it..try and keep up and we will try and do all we can for you both..." Although unsigned, Nichols references his wife Jennie and young daughter Alice ("sends kisses to her dear uncle B. and auntie B."). It appears that he was on a Barnstorming or Exhibition game tour at the time and references another Charlie numerous times ("Charlie is going to try and get some one to pitch in his place so we can go home or where ever you are"). Includes the original mailing envelope and a pair of oversized (7"x9") cabinet mounted photographs of Bennett and wife which appear to date to his playing days or very shortly thereafter. On the back of one is an ink notation placed there by Alice mentioning that she was named after Mrs. Bennett. Letter has splits along the upper fold lines but is otherwise in name shape with mild toning, envelope has torn right edge and tape at left with other scattered wear. The cabinets have mild wear and some light/moderate discoloration along with some scattered handwritten notations. Incredibly early Hall of Famer handwritten letter and of great historical interest. Includes auction LOA from JSA: Overall EX
