Description: Important Sid Luckman Chicago Bears professional model jersey c.1947. Incredible relic from one of the greatest players in NFL history whose accolades include MVP award, five time All-Pro, four time championship winner with the Bears, and is credited as being the pioneer of the -T+ formation. Luckman+s on field demeanor and pass accuracy were revolutionary for the era in which he played. Deep navy blue dureen jersey features the classic Bears orange striping on the sleeves with brilliant -42+ in high sheen satin twill affixed to the front and back. Evident use is visible throughout inclusive of two period team repairs to the back of the jerseys found in the area of the numbers. Appropriate -May & Halas, Chicago+ tagging remains affixed within the tail along with -44+ size and -Dry Clean Only+ flag tags. Based on comparison to period imagery the jersey appears to specifically date to the 1947 era and is consistent in every respect as it applies to numeral fonts and manufacture. It should be noted that the #42 was a team issued and applied number change from a period #12. This was a common practice during the 1940s era and was likely due to its original issuance to Walt Lamb for the 1947 season and did not make the team. Lamb+s size was almost identical to Luckman further explaining the selection of this particular shirt to have then been issued to Luckman. According to family history, the offered jersey originated from the President of Interstate United, a food service company which specialized in volume feeding. After his football career, Luckman served as an executive with Cellu-Craft Products - a plastic wrap company. Luckman was a supplier to Interstate United. The gentleman and Luckman became friends through work and gave the offered jersey to him as a token of appreciation. The connection between the two men is further corroborated within a period banquet program from 1975 honoring the gentleman. Luckman was on the board of directors. Interestingly there are a few areas of white paint spots on the shirt which were comically explained by Luckman himself to the original recipient as due to the fact he had wore the jersey while painting. These minor paint spots were left intact to preserve its original presentation but could be professionally removed if so desired. Superb and extremely scarce Luckman game jersey is one of only a scant handful in existence and ranks as one of the more important jerseys of its type to have entered the marketplace.
