Lot Number: 522

Description: Scarce 1932 Syl Johnson St Louis Cardinals professional model jersey with extremely rare four leaf clover patch. Beautifully preserved cream colored flannel jersey has the classic Birds on Bat "St. Louis" logo embroidered on front. Player number "23" appears on back in original red felt block numerals and the name "Johnson" is embroidered on front tail in red chain stitch. Also present on front tail is a light green felt four leaf clover patch, similarly embroidered "31." This is the first example of this patch that we have encountered and it is presumed to commemorate the teams' World Series Championship of the previous season. Appropriate Rawlings manufacturer's tag appears in the collar with handwritten size "42", additional "4" penned below, and player name "Johnson." Familiar red piping (which encircles the sleeves and neck) is nearly fully intact with a touch of minor fraying. Evident usage and wash wear throughout with small area of soiling on back and what appears to be three very small team executed repairs. Very isolated separation of back number in two places. Fine example of an exceptionally visual period game jersey with added significance of bearing what is potentially one of the only known surviving clover patches. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
