Bat exhibits strong usage wear including repaired handle crack and barrel wear consistent with usage. Centerbrand and Cobb facs. name stampings remain bold and pronounced. Two areas of period side writing from the Hillerich & Bradsby Co. remain visible on the sides of the bat as follows, "6-19-28 Cob-" and "Phila. Am. Lea. B.B.C.". This factory side writing is consistent with Cobb's playing tenure on the Phila. Athletics during the 1927 and 1928 seasons. Lathe markings remain visible on either end of bat indicating it was hand turned, surface remains fairly clean overall with a few minor areas of shellac residue most likely applied in the 1940's when many of the significant bats in the H&B collection were on a promotional tour of the country. Based on the markings and side writing on the bat we can conclude that Cobb either used this bat over a period of many years (possibly a favorite) or that it was used by Cobb several years after it was turned and then sent back to the factory in 1928. Cobb's batting statistics are truly astounding including lifetime totals of 3,034 games, .367 batting average, 11,429 at bats, 4,191 hits, 724 doubles, 297 triples, and 2,245 runs scored. The offered bat is one of the earliest dating period exemplars to surface and one of two known that has been factory side written. See a Picture of this Item 200 Original telegram sent to the Hillerich & Bradsby Co. by Mickey Mantle c.1957. Very interesting five page document with hand written corrections sent by Mantle in response to an inquiry made regarding a proposed book on hitting. Mantle's reply is not only insightful but many times revealing regarding his true feelings towards hitting, baseball, and life in general. Excerpts include: "When the Hillerich & Bradsby people asked me to jot down a few ideas about "how to hit" I thought they were kidding. Now if it had been 'how to strikeout' I would have been the perfect authority.", "Before I got 'temperamental' according to the press I.d sneak off in some corner and cry. That's right, bawl like a baby. I'll never forget the time I fanned five straight times during a doubleheader in Boston.", "I'll also made the mistake of believing the write-ups. As a result, I over did it. Next thing I knew I was crippled all over and I'm not including that arrested case of osteomylitis on my shin.". Mantle concludes on the fifth page with the following, "The supreme thrill, of course, will be hitting 60 homers but again I say Ruth's record is one that I doubt will ever be broken. end Mantle". The book for which this piece was submitted was never completed and to our knowledge this text has not previously been published.
