Lot Number: 457

Description: 1953 Rogers Hornsby Cincinnati Reds professional model home Manager's jersey. Cream colored flannel retains original Cincinnati Reds logo patch on front and Hornsby's number "50" on back. In the collar is "MacGregor" manufacturer's tag with size "46." Flag tag on inside front tail reads "Set 1 1953." Expected usage wear throughout with light surface pilling and incidental scattered staining. Slight fading to portions of logo and numbers as a result of period laundering. A team repair is found in the neck. (NOTE: Found just below the team repair in the collar are the outlines of the original stitching pattern for the rectangular strip tag which likely had 'Hornsby' name chain stitched onto the missing tag.) Regarded by many as the greatest right-handed hitter of all time, Hornsby is known to have abstained from reading or watching movies for fear of ruining his batting eye. "People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball" he once said, "I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." He hit over .400 three times, won seven batting titles, and retired in 1937 with the second highest batting average in baseball history (.358). Fine late career representation of Hornsby is of notable rarity with this being one of a scant few jerseys to have surfaced. Includes LOA from Hunt Auctions: EX
